Philadelphia to Improve Water Works A water works improvement ordinance, introduced in the Philadelphia. Pa., city council transfers $550,000 of loan funds to the bureau of water. This has been approved by the committee on public works, and the $550,000 expenditure is assured for betterment of the municipal water supply. Of this amount $250,000 is to he utilized for filter beds and plant improvements and a like; amount will cover pumping stations and machinery improvements. The balance of $50,000 will be used for purchasing fire hydrants and valves. Public Works Director Biles, in commenting on the proposed program said: “We hope to be able to clean the filters by mechanical methods rather than continuing the present system of manual labor.”
