MAKES FIRE TEST AT INDEPENDENCE HALL Shows How Well Protected the Nation’s Shrine Is from Fire-Pumpers, Automatic Pumps and Water Curtain Part of Test INDEPENDENCE SQUARE, Philadelphia, was the scene of considerable excitement on the afternoon of June 5, when an auxiliary alarm of fire was sent in from Independence Hall which summoned five engine companies and a truck company and which for a time gave the crowds the impression that the historic building was threatened with destruction. However, this was not the case as it was a test to show that the nation’s shrine is amply protected against fire. Within a few minutes after the alarm had been sounded the pumpers were at work, the automatic pumps in the building were set in motion, a special fire detail was called forth and a curtain of water completely enveloped the structure.
