The Care of Fire Apparatus The proper care and maintenance of fire apparatus is one of the most essential parts of fire-fighting. This work can only be efficiently and well conducted when the officers and men who handle the apparatus thoroughly understand them and what to do and not to do to keep them in prime condition. This knowledge largely depends upon the proper instruction of these men in their duties and in the intricacies of the machines which they are called upon to operate and handle. The immediate duty of instructing both officers and men in these matters must of necessity devolve upon the master mechanic of the fire department and therefore this office is one of the greatest importance.
