New York Fire Boats to be Oil Burners

Issue 14 and Volume 78.

New York Fire Boats to be Oil Burners The New York fire department has contracted with the Clinton Dry Docks, Inc., of Brooklyn for the conversion of the fireboats Thomas Willett and Janies Duane from coal burning to oil burning vessels. The bid price for both jobs is $49,860 which was the lowest of five bids. These two fireboats are sister ships and have been in the service fifteen years. They were the first fireboats New York City had of the clear deck, fire fighting type. The only superstructure above deck being the wheel house; excepting of course the fire fighting mast, hose reels, deck pipes, ventilators and smoke stack. New York now has one oil burner, the fireboat John Purroy Mitchel.
