PITTSBURGH WAREHOUSE FIRE AT NIGHT GIVES FIREMEN HARD BATTLE Flames Sweep North Side Storage Warehouse—Three Alarms Sounded as Fire Gains Headway—Burnings of the Week A FIRE which swept the top floor of the United Storage Company on River avenue between Federal and Sandusky streets in Pittsburgh on the night of October 19, proved one of the most spectacular night fires that had visited the city in many months. It required a three-hour stubborn fight by the fire department before the fire was brought under control. The fire which started from some cause unknown was discovered raging in a box car standing on a switch track at the upper end of the warehouse by an employee of the American Bridge Company who immediately sent in an alarm from Station 81, Federal and Isabella streets, a block from the burning building.
