Survey Made of Dubuque, Ia. A survey of the fire-fighting defenses of Dubuque, Ia., was made by engineers of the committee of fire prevention and engineering standards of the National Board of Fire Underwriters. In their report which has recently been published they stated that both the records and the management of the municipal plant are good. The city is supplied in two services by intermittent pumpage from wells and underground stream against an equalizing well and standpipe. While the source of water supply is adequate, the reserve pumping capacity is lacking unless steam equipment is kept in serviceable condition. The quantities of water available for fire protection is adequate in the prinpical mercantile district but inadequate at many points elsewhere on account of long dead ends in the distribution system.
