Chief Davis of Bayonne Retires Chief Alfred Davis officially retired as head of the fire department at Bayonne, N. J., on January 1, 1927, and Assistant Chief William McLoughlin has been advanced to fill the vacancy. Chief Davis was head of the department for twenty years. He was appointed chief on January 1, 1907, and placed in charge of the paid department that was established on September 3. 1906. He was a charter member of the Protection Engine Company, under the old volunteer system. The department was established on a two-platoon system on August 24, 1917. During the term of Chief Davis, several changes have occurred-—the department advanced from the old hand tub to the modern gasoline pumper, and the equipment was made such that it compared equally with other departments throughout the country.
