On October 22, he and a delegation from Davenport attended the funeral of late Chief James Kennedy of Cedar Rapids. At that time he appeared to be very active. Christmas eve, as the chief was lying in bed. he detected the odor of smoke. The fire department was called and they were directed by the chief in their work.
