Plan to Secure Pay Increases Chief R. D. Gambrell has secured pay increases for officers in the Dallas, Tex., fire department, by a most ingenious method. Several assistant chiefs had asked him for salary increases. The first assistant chief was changed to a deputy chief. This automatically changed his pay from $2,760 to 3,300 a year. The next two assistant chiefs were made first assistant chiefs, one man on each shift. This rank is paid $2,400 a year. The next eight assistant chiefs were changed to district chiefs at a raise in pay from $2,040 to $2,340.
