How far from the face of a building would you place the butt of a 35-ft. ladder and how should distance be figured? Question 2. What is the proper way to enter a cellar filled with smoke? Question 3. How would you ventilate a building filled with smoke? Answer 1. For trussed ladders, the distance the butt of the ladder is to be placed away from the building can be determined by dividing the length of the ladder by five and adding two to the quotient so found.
