Issue 24 and Volume 84.

THE COVER DESIGN The glorious part of fire-fighting, as judged by the public, is the few moments when firemen go rushing up ladders to dizzy heights or when they perform an excellent piece of showmanship. When the major part of the company assignment returns to quarters, the few companies that remain for overhauling are forgotten by the crowds. Such work has no glamour, although it” is none the less important, for it is protection against rekindling of the fire. The cover photograph shows firemen in Chelsea, Mass., overhauling at a junk shop fire. Before these men return they must be sure that all fire has been extinguished. The black smoke emitted by the rubber tires could be seen miles away.
