Whitaker Chief of Tacoma, Wash. Emory N. Whitaker has been appointed Chief of Fire Department, Tacoma, Wash., succeeding Emil Carlson who resigned after serving in the Fire Department for thirty-eight years. Chief Whitaker was born in Utica, N. Y., on September 9, 1881. He has worked his way up in the Tacoma Fire Department and has served as supply driver, chief’s driver, and the regular positions of the department. He was appointed to the department on September 1, 1903 as relief man. On April 1, two years later, he. was made Lieutenant and one year later was advanced to the rank of Captain. On September 12, 1917, Whitaker was promoted to Assistant Chief and on May 1 he became Chief of the F’ire Department.
