THE ROUND TABLE For Practical Discussion of Current Fire Department and Fire Management Problems RELATION OF DEPRESSION TO ARSON FIRES STUDENTS of insurance have for many years attempted to establish a direct relation between the number of fires set by the insured to the number of business failures. In other words they have attempted to show that as business failures increase, the number of arson fires will increase in the same proportion. In this they have not been successful for it was impossible to establish an empirical formula that would cover all cases. However, it is generally accepted as an axiom that such a condition of facts is true. The present business depression has tempted many an otherwise honest person to “sell out” to the insurance companies to avoid future losses in his business or to secure cash for business debts.
