Permanent Department for Sault Ste. Marie This year, Chief F. F. Trombley, of the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Fire Department asked the city commissioner for a paid fire department to replace the volunteer system which has protected the city in the past. In addition to this, he recommended the purchase of a new pumper and the installation of a new fire alarm system. The commission granted him six permanent men for the present, authorized the placement of thirty-two new fire alarm boxes, and five miles of new aerial fire alarm wire. Examinations will be held for prospective firemen before any full-time men are appointed.
