Chief John Nevel Retires Chief John Nevel of the Berea, Ohio, Fire Department has retired after fifty years in the fire service. He was appointed to the Cleveland Fire Department on March 17, 1894 and was assigned to Engine Co. 2, serving two years on probation. He was promoted to assistant engineer on October 1, 1904 and assigned to Engine Co. 1. He was transferred to Engine Co. No. 7 in 1905, and on December 28, 1911, was promoted to engineer. He remained in Engine Co. No. 7 until he retired on September 24, 1921. On October 1, 1921 he went to Berea as chief engineer, and was appointed chief of the department on August 1, 1927, which position he held until his retirement on March 16.
