The Cover Picture

Issue 5 and Volume 97.

The Cover Picture The Chemical Warfare Service of the Army Service Forces has the heavy responsibility of supplying every category of incendiary to the armed forces and also sends considerable quantities to our allies. Formerly a third of the work of the Chemical Warfare Corps, the supply of incendiary material now constitutes more than fifty per cent of its work. The front cover photograph shows U. S. Army Air Force white phosphorus bombs bursting over a Jap bomber and fighter plane on Lakunai airfield, Rabaul, New Britain. This 100 pd. bomb is an effective weapon against enemy antiaircraft positions and parked planes. Upon impact the bomb bursts and scatters particles of burning phosphorus over a wide area. This photograph was taken by U. S. Army photographers.
