Chief Dahill Active at 84 The nation’s fire service records for posterity the names of many men who served with distinction as fire chiefs long beyond the normal retirement age. In the forefront of these “young” old men is Chief Edward F. Dahill who, it is disclosed, at 84 is actively serving as head of the New Bedford, Mass., Fire Department. Chief Dahill, who was born on Jan. 27, 1862, proudly boasts membership in the International Association of Fire Chiefs since August, 1905, making him one of its oldest active members. He is perhaps more widely known as the creator of the Dahill hoist for aerial ladders and the fact that he had one of the first formulae for foam when that extinguishing agent was almost unknown.
