Palmer Asks Higher Salaries for Men Fire Chief W. Hendrix Palmer, Charlotte, N. C., on February 11 asked local government officials to increase salaries of Charlotte, firemen a minimum of ten per cent to meet rising living costs. This was one of five recommendations in the chief’s annual report to City Manager R. W. Flack. Other requests called for the erection of two new fire stations; purchase of an all-steel ladder truck with one-man control to replace a 1917 aerial ladder; increase in personnel of the department to allow members an, off-day once a week. Men now get a one-day holiday every two weeks. Restoration of the uniform allowance that was available for purchase of fire uniforms in prewar years is also asked.
