Persons in the News Ex-Chief J. J. McElligoff Dead John J. McElligott, former Fire Commissioner and Chief of Department, the first man to hold both posts in the history of the New York City Fire Department, died September 6 in Saint Clare’s Hospital, New York City after a two months’ illness. He was 62 years of age. Chief McElligott served with honor and distinction in all ranks of the Uniformed Force of the Department for a period of thirty-five years, living up to the highest traditions of the fire service and leaving behind him an oustanding record for ability and efficiency. He was always eager to improve fire fighting and prevention methods and was prompt to adopt the latest scientific improvements when assured of their value by practical demonstrations.
