World Wide Fire News West Indies City Burns An eight hour fire on June 19, 1948, all but destroyed the city of Castries, St. Lucia, Windward Islands, with damage expected to run into the millions.The capitol city has a population of 24,000. No lives were lost. The fire started from an undisclosed souice, in an uptown business house and spread rapidly through the combustible structures. Thousands were left homeless and light and telephone service all but disappeared. Nearly all government buildings were destroyed, as well as those housing the Castries Town Board Barcbys Bank, courts, library, cable office, post office, the newspaper “Voice of St. Lucia, a theatre, doctors’ offices, five hotels and most of the grocery and drug stores.
