Persons in the News N. D. Mitchell to Head Fire Protection Section, N.B.S. Nolan D. Mitchell, prominent in architectural and engineering fields, has been appointed Chief of the Fire Protection Section of the National Bureau of Standards, where he will direct Further research for the Building Technology Division on problems of fireresistance in relation to the design and construction of buildings and building materials. Mr. Mitchell has been on the staff of the National Bureau of Standards since 1922 and has made a number of important contributions in the fire protection field, an outstanding example of which is his investigation of the control of airplane hanger fires by the automatic application of water. His research on the fire-resistant properties of structural materials, such as metal-framed and wood-framed interior partitions and columns protected by gypsum, has led to the determination of the effects of fire and the time in which a…
