World Wide Fire News Flee Swiss Alpine Blest More than 800 fearful villagers were evacuated from their homes in the village of Goeschenen near the St. Gothard tunnel in the Alps without casualties while fire in a nearby Alpine redoubt began exploding stored ammunition. With the first explosions, many villagers scurried for safety to air raid shelters, mountain gorges and the St. Gothard tunnel itself while troops fought the fire. As the blasts increased in violence, telephone communications with the village at the north end of the great tunnel were broken; railway traffic was halted on b6th sides of the Italo-Swiss frontier and train crews and passengers fled trains stalled within the danger zone. Electric power had been shut off immediately after the fire began. No explanation was offeree as to the cause of the fire nor was ai y information advanced on the number of casualties.
