Fire and Police Duties Combined at Monterey Park, Calif. John Y. Cordell assumed office July 1 as the first head of the new Monterey Park, Calif., Public Safety Department. Cordell, who retired in 1943 as a battalion chief from the nearby Los Angeles Fire Department, organized the combined Sunnyvale, Calif., Fire and Police Public Safety Department in 1949. Chief Edward McElhannon, officially retired July 1 as head of the Monterey Park F.D. after 22 years of service. Merging of the city’s police and fire departments into a public safety department came after much discussion in the Monterey Park City Council. It was strongly advocated by City Manager John C.
