Fire Levels Grain Elevator Fire of unknown origin destroyed the Baumgartner grain elevator and grinding mill at Goldsmith, Ind., on Sept. 3. Loss was estimated at over $100,000. First indication of a fire came from an automatic siren atop the frame structure. It sounded a short blast, then stopped, according to workmen in a nearby shop. After about two minutes of silence, the siren again sounded, this time remaining on for approximately ten minutes. After that, apparently, the fire had destroyed the wiring of the apparatus. When the siren sounded for the second time, employees of neighboring plants left their work to see smoke and flames pouring from the top of the elevator. Elevator employees had been working in the grinding room, and firemen said it is possible the fire started there. Firemen from Tipton and Sharpsville who answered the call to the fire were helpless to halt the blaze.…
