5 Million Acres Burned The Department of the Interior reported March 17th that 5,220,070 acres of Federal and Indian lands were burned over during 1957, compared to 631,375 acres in 1956. Most of the damage was caused by 403 fires that destroyed 4,839,281 acres in Alaska. The major cause of these fires was lightning, according to the department.
