One area which holds promise of being a fertile field for its proponents is that of uniform insignia. At present most fire departments use practically the same cap and collar device for identifying officers—a replica of the speaking trumpet or “bugle” as it is termed in many cases, with the number of trumpets on the insignia varying according to rank. Further identification is added in many cases by the use of sleeve stripes of cloth or metal braid with the number, color and width of the stripe designating the wearer’s rank.
