The Watch Desk DEPARTMENTS Frustrated Firemen Find Plugs Flooded & Frozen Earlier this year, frustrated fire fighters of Meadville, Penn, stood by helplessly as flames destroyed a warehouse in the flood-stricken northwestern Pennsylvania city of 25,000. The blaze broke out early in the morning at the Race Street Lumber plant in the flooded section. The firemen used three amphibious vehicles to get to the scene but despite their efforts, when they got there, they couldn’t do anything about it because fire hydrants were frozen, and under water. “Washington crossing the Delaware had nothing on us,” muttered one of the blaze beaters, as they fought floating cakes of ice to remain afloat.
