Mountain View Installs Off-Shift Alert System Fire Chief Byron Chaney, Mountain View, Calif., Fire Department, has announced completion of the department’s new group alerting system. It may be the first on the West Coast. The system, through a master telephone at headquarters station, rings all off-duty firemen on the 967 and 968 exchange. The department and the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Co. worked on the new system for more than a year. Chaney said that in the past the dispatcher has had to dial each individual off-duty fireman and at the same time handle radio traffic and other phone calls, The chief said that to his knowledge, the system is the only one of its kind on the Peninsula and perhaps on the West Coast.
