Skokie, III., Fire Department Makes Fast Stop at Sprawling Plant PRE-FIRE PLANNING, a prompt offduty response and a highly efficient mutual aid plan paid off well in a fire at the Marsh Instrument Company, Skokie, Ill., on October 10. The blaze, starting in a storage section of the sprawling and undivided 160,000square-foot plant, was confined to an area of roughly 75 by 100 by the fast operation of more than 100 fire fighters, nine of whom were injured. Constructed of noncombustible walls but with unprotected steel columns, the building measured 525 feet long by 325 feet wide and was somewhat irregular in shape. The fire, of undetermined origin, involved nonproduction areas, including parts storeroom and tool department in the northwest corner of the one-story structure. First units on the scene were Skokie Engines 1 and 2, Truck 1 and Squad 1, who responded to an automatic alarm at 9:47 p.m.…
