However, with the increasing complexity of modern apparatus, major repairs pose serious problems for many departments, particularly those who lack specially trained maintenance personnel and shop facilities. Included in the latter are many small paid departments and by far the majority of volunteer departments. Human ingenuity has always been an important factor in fire fighting and to no little extent in fire apparatus maintenance. As a result many fire departments lacking in large-scale facilities have successfully solved many maintenance problems and kept their apparatus in excellent operating condition despite all obstacles.
