THE ROUND TABLE Modern Fire Hose Part 2 Jack D. Davis, Chief, Little Rock, Ark.: Our experience with fire hose in the past 10 years hasn’t shown any increase in the life span of the hose. The use of synthetic materials has influenced our purchasing. We have a card file system for each section of hose, giving an identification number, company assigned to, date in service, manufacturer’s name, etc. This card also shows the maintenance record for such things as resetting couplings, cutting back for pin leaks, etc. I feel something should be done to prevent fly-by-night hose peddlers, (using my terminology) from selling “sawmill” hose with their own name on it. I would recommend that reputable hose manufacturers be required to put a UL label on their hose to show that it comes up to the required specifications for good fire hose.
