LEGALLY SPEAKING IT HAS BEEN A MATTER of interest to many that the fire service has from the beginning increased the scope of the services which they provide to the communities they protect. In many areas this has caused policy questions to arise. The answers to these questions have oftentimes been delayed for reasons which should be scrutinized more closely. It will not be the purpose of this commentary to express an opinion as to the exact scope of activities for the fire service to undertake. Obviously the answer for a given community lies in the municipal charter and existing state law. Some considerations appear to be somewhat universal. It is possible for purposes of discussion to consider an aspect of the fire service which has undergone much scrutiny of a like nature.
