Sailors and Marines Organize Volunteer Department JOSN VOLUNTEER fire departments are as old as America itself, but in the Cloverhaven section of Shelby County, Tenn., they have added a new twist: All but one of the 20 volunteer firemen are military men, 17 of them on active duty. Both Navy and Marine personnel are members of the department. The department was organized nearly two years ago to protect the growing area east of the Naval Air Station at Memphis. About 90 percent of the 400 families living there are military personnel or dependents. Since then, the volunteers have answered 28 alarms and saved an estimated $110,000 in property in the 8-square-mile area. Insurance rates in Cloverhaven have also been reduced, saving homeowners a total of $4,800 annually. “The only benefit the individual receives is pride and satisfaction in serving the community in which he lives,” said Fire Chief Will F.…
