Wheel Bearing Lubrication Opens Path to Safety Checks Fire Apparatus Maintenance Most fire apparatus manufacturers recommend greasing front wheel bearings every six months or once each year. While I am in agreement with this recommended frequency, it is for a reason quite different from lubrication alone. Twice in the past six months, newspapers have reported accidents in which fire apparatus lost a front wheel while answering an alarm. Obviously, those trucks never reached the fire. Such reports spell in loud and clear terms a lack of maintenance by competent mechanics. They also contribute to a lack of confidence in the fire department and reflect on the departmental administration. The people who support the fire department have long memories when it comes to these failures. That is why I favor the six-month inspection and maintenance program for wheel bearings.
