Letters to the Editor DEPARTMENTS Vaporizing Liquid and Liquefied Gas Fire Extinguishers Withdrawn Scarborough, Ont.: The subject of continuing recognition of portable extinguishers using carbon tetrachloride, chlorobromomethane and other types of halogenated extinguishing agents has been discussed at several extinguisher conferences, but definite action towards early withdrawal of existing listings was not deemed necessary in light of the evident decline in demand for such units. At the 1966 conference of members of the Fire Council of Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada held on June 29, the matter was again discussed. After full consideration of all aspects, there was general agreement that, in view of the generation of obnoxious and possibly toxic products from such agents when applied to fire and because of the ready availability of other extinguishing agents of equal or superior effectiveness, positive steps to discourage their use should be initiated.
