Three Boston Firemen Blown Off Ladder by Back Draft in Home The Cover Story Three Boston firemen were blown off an extension ladder by a backdraft while they were fighting a three-alarm house fire that took the life of a four-year-old boy. The cover photo of this issue was taken right after the men fell to the ground and while a fourth fireman was scrambling down the ladder. In addition to the men blown from the ladder, all from Engine 17, five other firemen also were taken to hospitals and soon released after treatment. Two of the five collapsed from exhaustion as a result of their efforts to save the boy. Four other children were saved when the dead boy’s father, Theodore Eisenstadt, dropped them from a second-story porch into the arms of two neighbors early in the morning of July 8.
