Greater Milwaukee Meets EDITH Trial runs at fairs test methods and train firemen for promoting month-long buildup to week of intensive home exit drill program —Milwaukee F.D. photo. “The largest, most successful public relations effort ever undertaken in Greater Milwaukee,” said Deputy Chief Ed Canavan of the Milwaukee Fire Department about the promotion of Operation EDITH (Exit Drill in the Home) in his county last fall. Co-operation by dozens of other fire departments and civic groups produced a countywide Fire Prevention Week campaign of unprecedented scope in Wisconsin. The use of Operation EDITH last year was first proposed by the fire prevention bureau of the Milwaukee Fire Department. Recognizing the logic of including the suburbs, Canavan decided to form a cooperating council of representatives of fire departments throughout the area.
