5 Chicago Firemen Clown It Up For Serious Goal—Fire Safety Young audiences stare in disbelief when, in the midst of a clown routine, the Five Funny Flames quietly announce, “We are real Chicago Firemen.” The clown idea began 10 years ago when the Chicago Fire Department’s annual Thrill Show at Soldiers Field seemed to need a touch of comic relief. Five men volunteered. Now the clowns average three shows a week as a traveling public relations team for the department. Demand for the Five Funny Flames is so great that the number of engagements has to be limited. It’s been estimated they have given more than 1,000 performances. Humor helps teach fire safety, makes friends and builds goodwill. The Five Funny Flames can gear their routine to any age group and occasion from a church group program to a parade.
