3 Firemen Honored for Saving 5 Children in Paterson, N.J. Three Paterson, N.J., fire fighters have received municipal and state honors for their rescue of five children from a blazing apartment in a three-story, wood frame tenement. Captain Warren Gallagher and Firemen William Filipelli and Allen DeRitter received letters of commendation from Governor Richard J. Hughes in a ceremony at the governor’s office in Trenton, as well as the Paterson Mayor’s Medal, Fire and Police Board commendations and Paterson Jaycees citations. An apartment in the rear of the first floor at 96 North Third Street was fully involved when the men, all members of Engine Company 12, reached the scene in response to an alarm at 11:21 a.m. last February 4.
