Eight persons died and seven others were injured when a basement fire raced up an open stairway and involved all three floors of an apartment house in Los Angeles. Fire fighters rescued 30 of the tenants. One young boy, who is in the cover photo, was saved by immediate mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by fire fighters. The first-in companies reported that there was fire on all floors of the building when they arrived in response to an alarm at 4:40 a.m. last October 13. Several tenants had already jumped from upper floors. Ten companies worked for 30 minutes to knock down the fire in the 40-year-old apartment house.
