Mayor Bottles Up Fire Threat When the mayor’s wife in St. Charles, Ill., parted the curtains to let sunshine into a bedroom, fire prevention went out the window without her realizing it. Smoke was coming from the bedroom when Mayor C. V. Amenoff returned to his home at noon last November 25, about an hour after his wife had parted the curtains and left the house. The mayor quickly extinguished a smoldering fire which had burned part of the plastic desk top and charred a vinyl coin purse. In response to a call from the mayor, Assistant Chief William Helm, head of the fire prevention bureau of the St. Charles Fire Department, looked over the scene and came up with an explanation.
