Miami F.D. Marches Ahead Should a fire department be content with extinguishing fires and conducting public information programs? Or should it join the passing parade? The Miami, Fla., Fire Department did just that 10 years ago when it began participating in the annual Junior Orange Bowl Parade. Chief Lawrence Kenney thinks it’s a great idea and backs his men solidly. “These floats are made by my men in the fire department on their own time,” the chief explained. “They’re interested in their job and they’re willing to go all out—on their own time —to do something that will help prevent fires.” “We’re always looking for ways to get the message of fire prevention across, especially to young people.
