Shortstop Honors Firemen

Issue 4 and Volume 123.

Shortstop Honors Firemen When the New York Mets shortstop, Bud Harrelson, went back to Hayward, Calif., for a testimonial dinner, he remembered how he got started in competitive baseball. Before receiving several awards at the dinner last December, Bud recalled playing shortstop in the Hayward Fire Department Little League, and he presented a plaque inscribed to Chief Matthew Jimenez, Arson Rodrigues, and the Hayward Fire Department “in appreciation for giving me my start in baseball.” Rodrigues coached the Little League team which propelled Harrelson toward his high school baseball career in Hayward and later with the world champion Mets.
