Types of Sprinkler Heads Made for Specific Needs Industrial Fire Safety The first sprinkler system, of doubtful reliability, is believed to have been devised in England in the early 19th century. It had perforated fittings attached to dry pipes which were filled with water from an overhead tank when a rope burned through and released a counterweight valve. About 1878, the perforated fittings were discarded and only perforated pipes were used. But because manual control valves were involved, reliability was a mute question. However, a beginning had been made. The manufacturing of sprinkler heads started in the latter half of the 19th century, and some of those early manufacturers are still in business today.
