It’s All Jake With Engine Brake Beverly Hills Fire Dept. Finds BATTALION CHIEF Beverly Hills, Calif., Fire Department Diesel engines and the Jacobs Engine Brake have enabled the Beverly Mills, Calif., Fire Department to significantly reduce its response time. In addition, the engine brake has given the department a greater degree of safety for our equipment, our personnel and the other users of Beverly Hills streets. In late 1965, the decision was made to repower a 1949 American LaFrance 1,000-gpm pumper by replacing its gasoline engine with a Detroit diesel 6V-71N and replacing the vehicle’s vacuum-hydraulic brakes with air brakes. As soon as the repowering job proved successful, we decided to begin tests on the Jacob brake. Members of the department took numerous rides in commercial tractor-trailer rigs to learn the characteristics of this brake.
