Water Tower Article Brings Deluge of Recollections Bells, Buffs and Blazes Scratch a fire buff and you’re certain to discover a latent water tower fan, as reader response demonstrated following a recent column concerning Boston and Baltimore towers. Reaction was heaviest from the Pacific Coast, where a number of fire fighters and fans called attention to the towers of the San Francisco Fire Department. SFFD Assistant Chief Rene Gautier, director of training, says the Cable Car City has used water towers since 1898 and adds that one built in that year was retired from service only last year. “The 71-foot-tower built in 1902 is still in use and performs admirably,” says Gautier. “Originally horse-drawn, it has progressed through a succession of motorized tractors and alteration to pneumatic tires. “Our two small towers—30-footers— were built in 1928 on Mack Bulldog chassis and are the only equipment in our area still using…
