Court Trims Firemen’s Right To Wear Beards And Sideburns The right of the San Francisco Fire Department to enforce regulations concerning beards and sideburns has been upheld by a United States District Court. The decision was made on the basis of the need for breathing apparatus masks to have a tight face seal. In a decision last September in the case of Burrow vs. Alioto (Joseph Alioto, mayor of San Francisco) et al, Judge Alfonso J. Zirpoli of the U.S. District Court for Northern California declared in dismissing the action brought by a member of the San Francisco Fire Department, “There is no requirement that the rules and regulations of the fire department shall be fashioned to meet the pleasure or preference of individual members.” After explaining that the “right of freedom of expression and the right of privacy are not without limit,” the judge asserted, “When the regulation of…
