Mutual-Aid-Call Aerial Ladder Helps Quell Fire In Texas Church Photo by Fire Marshal James DeKock McAllen Fire Department Within a few minutes after transmitting a radio warning to evacuate all Catholic and Methodist churches in the area, a pilot soloing in a singleengine plane crashed into the Shrine of San Juan, the largest Catholic church in South Texas. The fire that followed the crash in San Juan in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, destroyed the church and a cafeteria that were part of a complex that included St. John’s Parochial School and a retreat house. The total loss was estimated at $1.5 million by the Rev. E. A. Ballard, chancellor of the Brownsville Diocese. Mass was being said when the plane crashed into the church, and 60 priests, who had just come from a meeting, were in the church. There were about 70 school children in the cafeteria at the…
