With the nation living “in an environment of crime and drug addiction,” fire protection and prevention are more crucial than ever, according to John J. Ahern, president of the National Fire Protection Association. Ahern, who is director of security of General Motors Corp., Detroit, spoke at the opening session of the Association’s 75th Annual Meeting, which got under way on May 17 at the San Francisco Hilton. “We have seen a drastic change in our social climate in the last few years,” he said. “We are experiencing well-planned, concerted attacks on police, government and industry.
