Penny-Wise Ben Franklin Talks on Fire Prevention As part of the 100th anniversary year celebration of the Philadelphia Fire Department, a 16-foot-high bust of Benjamin Franklin was unveiled outside the quarters of Engine 8. This is a Fitting place for the bust because Benjamin Franklin in 1736 founded the Union Fire Company, the first organized fire company in what was then the American Colonies, and the Union Fire Company became Engine 8 when the Philadelphia Fire Department was established as a paid force in 1871. The Poor Richard Club, the nation’s oldest advertising club, sponsored the making of the fiber glass bust in which are embedded 80,000 pennies made in the United States Mint across the street from Station 8.
